Substack vs TikTok: Which Is Better for Writers?

The short answer: Substack Notes is a words feed where readers can subscribe to you in one tap. TikTok is a short video feed built for discovery, but its clickable profile link needs 1,000 followers or a Verified Business Account. Use TikTok to get found, and Notes plus your Substack to turn viewers into subscribers.

Based on Substack Help, On Substack, TikTok Help Center, TikTok Newsroom and Buffer, checked 2 November 2026.

Maybe you built a TikTok following and want readers who stay. Or you write on Substack and keep hearing you should be on TikTok too. This page compares the two for a writer: who sees your work, where the link goes, and how a viewer becomes a subscriber. For the step by step funnel, see our guide to promote your Substack on TikTok.

The rows that decide most cases are "Clickable link" and "Subscribe path." A Note sits one tap from your list. A TikTok sits a profile visit, a link and a signup page away.

What Substack Notes does for a writer

Substack Help says Notes are short-form posts where creators share posts, links, images, quotes and comments with their subscribers and "the greater Substack network." Notes are public on the web, in the app and on your profile.

Three details matter:

  • Subscribing takes one tap. Substack Help says clicking "subscribe" on a creator's Note subscribes you to their publication.
  • The Home feed reaches past your followers. It mixes people a reader follows, publications their subscriptions recommend, and restacks.
  • Notes don't hit inboxes. Subscribers aren't emailed when you post a Note, though they may see it in a roundup digest or a push notification.

A Note can carry up to 6 images or GIFs, or one video of up to five minutes, and you can schedule Notes in the composer. Substack has never published a Notes character limit.

Substack also shares two growth claims. In July 2024, Substack said writers who posted three or more thoughtful Notes in their launch week gained 50% more total subscribers than those who didn't. In October 2024, it said the app was the number one source of subscriptions on the platform. See our guide to growing your Substack with Notes.

What TikTok does for a writer

TikTok is a feed of short vertical videos and photo posts, built to show creators to people who don't follow them yet. One good video can reach strangers who would never find a newsletter on their own.

On size, TikTok said on 31 August 2026 that it reaches 189 million people across the European Union every month (its seventh Digital Services Act transparency report, covering January to June 2026). TikTok doesn't publish a global monthly user count; the big global numbers in other articles are third-party estimates.

TikTok Help says TikTok Studio, in the app or on the web, lets you upload, schedule and edit posts and see analytics, and that web uploads can run up to 30 minutes. TikTok's own pages disagree on how far ahead you can schedule, so check what your account shows.

TikTok suits writers who can talk to a camera: serial fiction, recipes, explainers, book talk. If your best work only lands as paragraphs, TikTok asks you to turn it into speech first.

On Notes, a link in a Note is clickable, and the subscribe button is right there. On TikTok, the clickable link lives on your profile, and TikTok Help says: "You can add a link to a website on your TikTok profile if you have at least 1,000 followers, or if you have a Verified Business Account" (checked 2 November 2026). TikTok's account types page says the same for General TikTok Accounts with at least 1,000 followers.

To add it: in the TikTok app, tap Profile, then Edit profile, then Add next to Links. TikTok also says it no longer supports links that open or log you into other social media apps; website links, such as your Substack, still work.

Before you reach 1,000 followers, end videos with your name and "search me on Substack," use the same handle on both apps (Substack's TikTok guide recommends the name people already know you by), and say in your bio text what you publish on Substack.

Tip: once the link unlocks, make your Substack the only link in your bio. Substack's social guide (29 May 2025) says creators who remove competing links, Linktree included, see significantly more of their audience follow them to Substack.

How TikTok viewers become Substack subscribers

The path has four steps:

  1. A video with a specific promise. Say exactly why you started a Substack and what people get there that they can't get anywhere else, as Substack's TikTok guide recommends.
  2. A profile visit. Pin a video about your Substack to the top of your profile so every visitor sees it.
  3. The bio link. One tap to your Substack.
  4. The subscribe page. Then Notes keeps new readers seeing you between posts.

Substack's social guide adds that face-to-camera videos consistently outperform other ways of sharing a Substack. Scripts, hooks, formats and a first month plan live in our guide to promote your Substack on TikTok.

Substack's TikTok tools

  • Portrait clips you can download. Substack Help (updated 21 October 2026) says that after you upload or record a video post on the web, the scissors icon offers AI-generated clips in Portrait or Landscape. "Download" saves an .mp4 you can upload to TikTok. Manual clips can run up to five minutes.
  • TikTok embeds in your posts. Paste a TikTok link into a post draft and it embeds. Substack Help (updated 25 October 2026) says it plays on Chrome and in the app, opens a new tab on Safari, and shows as a linked image in email.
  • Your handle and social links. Substack's TikTok guide (13 January 2025) says to claim a handle in the app and connect your social accounts so followers can find you.

Who should post where

Writers who think in spoken hooks, or who have a visual or serial format, lean TikTok for discovery: storytellers, food writers, book reviewers, anyone who can explain one idea in a minute on camera.

Essayists and analysts whose work lives in long paragraphs usually get more from Notes, where readers can follow an argument and subscribe on the spot. For long video, see Substack vs YouTube.

One test: can you say your best idea out loud in 30 seconds and make a stranger curious? If yes, TikTok can carry it.

How to run both

A simple loop:

  • Post the idea as a Note first. The replies tell you which ideas land.
  • Record a face-to-camera version for TikTok. Say the strongest Note to camera and point people to your Substack.
  • Pin your Substack video and keep the bio link current.

Tip: when a TikTok takes off, have a fresh Note and a recent post ready, so new visitors see you're active.

For Notes timing, the native composer works, and our guide to schedule Substack Notes compares your options. For one queue covering Notes and TikTok, Buffer is a friendly pick. Buffer lists both TikTok and Substack among its channels; its Free plan connects up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel, and Essentials is $5 per channel a month (checked 2 November 2026; Buffer says its pricing was last updated in November 2025). Our guide to using Buffer with Substack Notes walks through the setup. For Reels and Stories, see Substack vs Instagram.

FAQ

Is Substack better than TikTok for writers?

For building a list of readers you own, yes for most writers. Notes readers can subscribe in one tap, and Substack lets you export your mailing list. TikTok can reach far more strangers, but viewers have to leave TikTok to subscribe.

Can TikTok grow a Substack?

Yes, if you give viewers a clear reason and a working link. Substack's own guides recommend face-to-camera videos, a pinned video about your Substack, and making Substack the only link in your bio.

In the TikTok app, tap Profile, then Edit profile, then Add next to Links. TikTok Help says the website link is available once you have at least 1,000 followers, or if you have a Verified Business Account (checked 2 November 2026). Until then, tell viewers to search your name in the Substack app.

What does "Substack" mean on TikTok?

When a TikTok creator says "it's on my Substack," they mean their publication on Substack: a newsletter, website and app profile where readers subscribe for free or paid posts, videos and chats.

Can I share Substack videos on TikTok?

Yes. When you upload a video post, Substack offers AI-generated clips in portrait or landscape. Download a portrait clip as an .mp4 and upload it to TikTok (Substack Help, updated 21 October 2026).

Is Substack Notes like TikTok?

Only loosely. Both feeds show posts from people you don't follow yet. Notes is mostly text, with up to 6 images or one short video per Note. TikTok is built around vertical video.

Should I schedule TikTok and Substack Notes from one place?

Substack schedules Notes natively in the composer, and TikTok schedules videos from TikTok Studio on desktop. If you want one queue for both, Buffer connects TikTok and Substack (buffer.com, checked 2 November 2026), and its free plan covers up to 3 channels.

How do I know if TikTok sends me subscribers?

Open a post's stats on Substack. When readers arrive from a social link, Substack Help says it lists the site domain under "Popular sites." Also compare subscriber growth on days you post a TikTok with days you don't.

The short version

Notes turns attention into subscribers in one tap. TikTok puts your face and best ideas in front of strangers, as long as you give them a reason to visit your profile and a link that works. Write on Notes daily, bring your strongest ideas to TikTok on camera, and point your profile at your Substack. For the other platforms, see Substack Notes vs Threads, Substack Notes vs Twitter, Substack Notes vs Bluesky, Substack vs Mastodon, Substack Notes vs LinkedIn posts and Substack vs Facebook.
